The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has stepped up efforts to strengthen Tanzania’s environmental management systems through international cooperation, following high-level talks with Turkish institutions at the Konya Agriculture Exhibition in Turkey.

The engagement brought together NEMC officials and key stakeholders from Turkey, including representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change, research institutions, and urban development agencies.

The discussions focused on sharing experience and best practices in environmental conservation and management, as both sides seek practical solutions to growing environmental challenges.

During the meeting, Senior Social Welfare Officer Suzan Chawe outlined NEMC’s core responsibilities, noting that the Council advises the Government of Tanzania on environmental matters and ensures compliance with environmental laws.

She said NEMC also oversees Environmental and Social Impact Assessments, conducts research, enforces regulations, and promotes environmental education among the public.

The talks covered key areas such as the use of modern technologies to support conservation agriculture, improving environmental data collection and public reporting, strengthening stakeholder participation in enforcing environmental laws, and expanding environmental education, particularly in schools. Strategies to address the effects of climate change were also discussed.

Experts from Konya emphasised the importance of scientific research in guiding policy and regulatory decisions, especially in controlling pollution linked to industrial activities.

Alongside the discussions, the Tanzanian delegation toured the exhibition, which showcased innovative farming tools and technologies designed to promote conservation agriculture and sustainable development.

The delegation, which included representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and other stakeholders, was also received by Tanzania’s Ambassador to Turkey, Iddi Seif Bakari

The visit highlighted Tanzania’s growing focus on environmental diplomacy and international collaboration.

The outcomes of the engagement are expected to strengthen NEMC’s capacity in executing its mandate while deepening cooperation between Tanzania and Turkey in environmental protection and sustainability.
