Christians have been urged to embrace forgiveness as a central pillar of their faith, with the Head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (KKKT), Alex Gehaz Malasusa, saying forgiveness carries greater spiritual value than many religious rituals and offerings.
Speaking in an interview in Dar es Salaam, Dr Malasusa said Christians and society at large should live in a spirit of both receiving and giving forgiveness, as taught in the Lord’s Prayer.
He explained that in the prayer commonly known as “Our Father who art in heaven,” believers ask God to forgive their sins just as they forgive those who wrong them.
“Our responsibility, yours and mine, is to encourage society and remind people that Christianity calls us to live in a spirit of receiving forgiveness, which Jesus himself prayed for on our behalf. But we must also extend forgiveness to others,” he said.
Dr Malasusa noted that forgiveness is not only a personal virtue but also a responsibility for every Christian, adding that believers should actively promote reconciliation within their communities.
He said the teaching of forgiveness is deeply rooted in the Bible and remains essential for maintaining harmony and unity in society.
According to the bishop, Christians should prioritise reconciliation with others before taking part in worship, noting that many biblical teachings emphasise the importance of forgiving others.
“Forgiveness is greater than worship and other celebrations that Christians often observe. It is a fundamental principle that must guide our daily lives,” he said.
He added that promoting forgiveness within families, communities and the nation is crucial for building a peaceful and morally grounded society.
Dr Malasusa further urged Tanzanians to embrace a culture of tolerance and understanding, saying forgiveness benefits both the one who forgives and the one who is forgiven, while also strengthening social cohesion.
