The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Infrastructure has called on Tanzanians to closely follow weather information issued by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), stressing its vital role in planning and implementing activities across economic and social sectors.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Selemani Kakoso (MP), made the appeal during the Committee’s visit to TMA offices in Dar es Salaam.

“I urge Tanzanians to consider the forecasts provided by TMA before undertaking tasks in agriculture, water management, trade, and other sectors. TMA consistently provides reliable updates daily through various media platforms,” Hon. Kakoso said.

He added that the quality of TMA’s services and the expertise of its staff have earned international recognition, with the Authority offering technical support to meteorological institutions in several African countries.

The visit also allowed the Committee to review TMA’s ongoing projects, including the construction of the Eastern Regional Office, the Tsunami Early Warning Center, and the National Verification Center for Meteorological Equipment.

Members advised TMA to strengthen project management to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards.

Speaking on behalf of the government, Minister of Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa (MP), assured that the Sixth Phase Government will continue investing in the meteorological sector.

He pledged to closely monitor funding and implementation to guarantee the completion of these critical infrastructure projects.

TMA Director General and Vice-Chair of the International Panel on Climate Change Science, Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, expressed gratitude to the Parliamentary Committee for its support.

“The Committee’s guidance has been instrumental in addressing challenges and strengthening our infrastructure, including the completion of five weather radars, enhanced operational equipment, and capacity building for meteorological experts,” he said.

Dr. Chang’a also thanked the Government of Tanzania for facilitating the construction of the Eastern Regional Office and the Tsunami Early Warning Center, reporting that progress has reached 65% and 40% respectively.

Once completed, these facilities will position TMA as a regional hub for verifying meteorological equipment and services across Africa.
