World-renowned boxing legend Manny Pacquiao is set to visit Tanzania in May as part of efforts to advance the development of boxing in the country.
Speaking to The Respondent Online, Lukelo Willilo, President of the Tanzania Boxing Federation, said the visit is part of the federation’s long-term strategy to strengthen the sport and create opportunities for local talent.
“Pacquiao was initially expected to come earlier, but due to his international commitments, the visit has been rescheduled to May. We are confident that the new timeline will allow us to organise a successful programme,” Willilo said.
Preparations for the visit are progressing smoothly, with discussions ongoing between the federation and Pacquiao’s team to finalise his schedule in Tanzania.
The boxer is expected to participate in a series of social and sporting events designed to inspire young athletes and promote the sport across the country.
A highlight of the visit will be an international boxing bout aimed at identifying and nurturing local talent.
The event will give Tanzanian boxers a unique opportunity to showcase their skills on a larger stage while gaining first-hand experience from one of the sport’s greatest champions.
Willilo said Pacquiao’s presence will provide valuable learning opportunities for boxers, coaches, and sports officials.
“This is a rare chance for our athletes to learn directly from someone who has reached the highest level in boxing. It will help raise the standard of the sport in Tanzania,” he added.
The federation expects the visit to strengthen the sport’s profile nationally, encourage youth participation, and open doors for Tanzanian boxers to access international networks and professional opportunities.
Sports stakeholders say hosting a global icon like Pacquiao will not only elevate boxing in Tanzania but also inspire a new generation of athletes to pursue the sport professionally.
