The government is planning long-term measures to control recurring floods that frequently affect residents of Morogoro Region during the rainy season.
Finance Minister Khamis Mussa Omar said the government will continue working on proposals submitted by the Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Kighoma Malima, aimed at finding a lasting solution to floods that repeatedly disrupt people’s lives and economic activities in the region.
Speaking during a visit to the regional offices of the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi in Morogoro, the minister said the government recognises the seriousness of the problem and is committed to addressing it through strategic infrastructure investments.
He said the proposed interventions include the construction of water reservoirs and other infrastructure designed to regulate water flow during heavy rains and reduce the risk of flooding in affected areas.
According to Mr Omar, the reservoirs will also serve other economic purposes such as supporting irrigation farming and providing water for livestock during the dry season, thereby contributing to agricultural productivity in the region.
“The government will continue working on the requests raised by the regional leadership to ensure that a sustainable solution is found to address the flood challenge facing Morogoro,” he said.
The minister said his visit to the CCM regional office formed part of a routine engagement with party leadership following his appointment as Minister of Finance and a member of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
He noted that the ruling party has an important role in overseeing government performance to ensure the effective implementation of its election manifesto and the delivery of development to citizens.
“The party entrusted with governing the country has the responsibility to monitor government activities and ensure the manifesto commitments are implemented for the benefit of wananchi,” he said.
Morogoro CCM Regional Chairman Joseph Masunga commended the minister for recognising the importance of engaging party structures during official duties in the region.
Mr Masunga said that since he assumed the position, Mr Omar is the first minister to formally plan a visit to introduce himself at the party’s regional office while carrying out official government responsibilities in the region.
He added that the party in Morogoro continues to oversee government implementation of the CCM manifesto while also undertaking renovations of the party’s regional office building.
Mr Masunga called on stakeholders to support the ongoing renovation efforts, saying improved infrastructure will strengthen the party’s operations as it continues to coordinate development oversight in the region.
