Government moves to safeguard fuel supply as global tensions rise

Tanzania’s energy authorities and major petroleum suppliers have moved to reassure the public over the availability of fuel, as the government intensifies coordination with industry players amid rising geopolitical tensions affecting global oil markets.

The Director General of the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), Dr James Mwainyekule, on March 4 attended a high-level meeting bringing together owners of Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in the country to discuss strategies aimed at maintaining a stable supply of petroleum products.

The meeting was convened by the Minister for Energy, Deogratias Ndejembi, who held consultations with the industry players to review the government’s preparedness and measures in place to protect the domestic fuel supply chain.

The discussions come at a time when tensions between Iran and United States continue to raise concerns about potential disruptions in global oil supply and price volatility.

Addressing the meeting, Mr Ndejembi assured Oil Marketing Companies that the government remains alert and fully prepared to address any challenges that may arise from the evolving international situation.

He said authorities have already taken necessary steps to safeguard the country’s fuel supply and ensure that Tanzanians continue to access petroleum products without disruption.

“The government is vigilant and well prepared. We have taken every possible step to guarantee the availability of fuel in the country, and we will continue to work closely with stakeholders in the sector,” he said.

The minister also urged fuel suppliers to strictly comply with the country’s laws and regulations while ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to consumers.

“We ask for continued cooperation from all industry players so that Tanzanians can continue receiving fuel services without any obstacles,” he added.

Dr Mwainyekule used the meeting to reiterate EWURA’s commitment to working closely with companies operating in the petroleum sector to ensure smooth operations and regulatory compliance.

He assured the companies of the regulator’s continued support in facilitating their activities while maintaining oversight to protect consumers and the national energy supply system.

At the same time, he cautioned that any operator found violating established procedures and regulations would face legal action.

The meeting reflects the government’s broader efforts to closely monitor global energy developments while strengthening collaboration with private sector players to safeguard Tanzania’s fuel supply amid shifting international dynamics.
