The government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), has advanced efforts to bring electricity to rural communities, aiming to improve access to reliable energy and support local development.
Danstan Kalugira, REA Project Supervisor for the Southern Highlands, said the government has allocated TZS 3.1 billion to extend electricity to six hamlets in Ludewa District. The project is expected to connect an initial 160 households once completed.
“The Ludewa project is being implemented by SUMA JKT. Despite heavy rains this season, the contractor is maintaining steady progress and the project is on track for timely completion,” Mr. Kalugira said.
The initiative is part of REA’s wider strategy to enhance rural electrification under Phase Two B (HEP 2B), which targets 9,009 hamlets across the country.
Deodatus Balile, Chairman of the Tanzania Editors’ Forum (TEF), observed the project and noted the importance of monitoring how government funds are utilized in rural electrification initiatives.
“The visit allowed us to see how allocated funds are being applied to deliver electricity to rural communities in Ludewa District, supporting households and local businesses with reliable energy,” Mr. Balile said.
REA continues to implement similar projects nationwide, reinforcing the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access in rural areas and supporting socio-economic development.
