The Fair Competition Commission (FCC) has educated students at Mnazi Mmoja Secondary School on consumer rights, responsibilities, and the risks associated with counterfeit products, ahead of this year’s World Consumer Rights Week.

The awareness session aimed to equip students with the knowledge to make informed choices, emphasizing the importance of using safe and quality-assured products.

During the event, FCC Consumer Protection Officer, Thecla Kitosi, highlighted the rights of consumers to access safe, high-quality goods and services, and cautioned against falling prey to low-priced counterfeit products that could endanger health and safety.

“Every consumer has the right to safe, genuine, and quality products. Learn to identify authentic products and avoid being misled by cheap imitations,” said Ms. Kitosi.

Senior Consumer Protection Officer, Magdalena Hall, elaborated on consumer duties, including reading product instructions, keeping purchase receipts, and reporting substandard products.

She also encouraged students to act as community ambassadors, spreading awareness about the dangers of counterfeit goods to family and peers.

The session provided students with the opportunity to ask questions and engage directly with FCC officers, enhancing their understanding of consumer protection and safe purchasing practices.

This initiative forms part of FCC’s continuous public education efforts, particularly targeting youth, to foster a society capable of making informed consumer decisions. It also contributes to the lead-up to World Consumer Rights Week, an annual observance aimed at raising awareness of consumer rights globally.

Students actively participated in the discussions, demonstrating curiosity and commitment to promoting consumer protection within their communities.
