Caritas opens mental health centre to support families and youth in Mbeya

Caritas Development Organization, under the Catholic Archdiocese of Mbeya, has launched a dedicated psychological counselling and support centre to address rising mental health challenges in the community.

The initiative is designed to provide professional guidance to individuals and families, helping them maintain mental well-being amid daily pressures.

The new centre, established at the Utengamao Iyunga Centre, aims to serve youth and adults facing stress, fear, academic pressures, and life hardships.

Consolata Mhanga, the centre’s Community Welfare Officer, highlighted that mental health issues in Mbeya and surrounding areas have been exacerbated by chronic illnesses, relationship problems, and social challenges, often leaving affected individuals without proper support.

“Mental health is a vital part of human well-being. Daily challenges can take a heavy toll on a person’s mental state. Recognizing this, we established a dedicated centre to provide counselling, psychological support, and professional guidance to help individuals navigate life’s difficulties,” Mhanga said.

The centre offers confidential services, focusing on helping clients manage emotions, cope with challenges, and raise awareness about mental health issues in the community.

Prakseda Killia, a Caritas representative, added that the Utengamao Iyunga Centre also provides therapy and support for children with disabilities through the Simama Community-Based Rehabilitation program.

“While our psychological support services are available to all, we began with therapy for children with disabilities and a clinic for epilepsy. We encourage parents and caregivers not to hide children with special needs, as they deserve care and attention like any other child,” Killia said.

Lugano Mwamsojo, the Ward Executive Officer for Iwambi, representing the city’s Chief Medical Officer, emphasized that the centre’s services will help reduce the negative consequences of stress, particularly among youth facing multiple pressures in life.

The initiative marks a significant step in promoting mental wellness and building an inclusive, supportive community in Mbeya.
