The Minister of Industry and Trade, Judith Kapinga, has urged the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA) to continue leading the drive to formalize businesses in Tanzania by strategically enhancing its service delivery systems.
Speaking at the opening of the second BRELA Staff Council meeting in Mwanza today, Minister Kapinga emphasized the critical role of technology in improving efficiency and reducing operational costs.
“The adoption of advanced digital systems can cut administrative costs by 25 to 30 percent, while improving service delivery. It is essential that we evaluate our systems against these costs to ensure we are operating efficiently,” she said.
The Minister highlighted that user-friendly digital platforms encourage more entrepreneurs to register their businesses, noting that convenience is a key driver of formalization.
She projected that Tanzania could see a 20 to 30 percent increase in new business registrations in the coming years as BRELA continues to strengthen its systems strategically.
“BRELA is a strategic institution in shaping the national economy. It is the gateway to business success in Tanzania. Its efficiency is crucial to ensuring sustainable business growth. Through BRELA, we have seen significant achievements in the registration of business names, companies, trademarks, services, and the issuance of industrial and business licenses,” Minister Kapinga added.
Welcoming the Minister, BRELA Chief Executive Officer Mr. Godfrey Nyaisa reported that the agency had maintained strong operational and financial performance in the first half of the 2025/2026 financial year, achieving 78 percent of its targets.
“On revenue collection, BRELA surpassed its target by 105 percent, demonstrating strong resource management and effective operational systems. In total, TZS 3.1 billion was remitted to the Treasury Registrar,” Mr. Nyaisa said.
The two-day BRELA Staff Council, running from March 4 to 5, 2026, in Mwanza, brings together staff to deliberate and make decisions on ten key operational and strategic agenda items, aimed at strengthening BRELA’s role in formalizing business activities nationwide.
