The Trade Union of Government and Health Employees of Tanzania (TUGHE) has officially launched its 2026 internal General Election, marking the start of the process to select leaders who will guide the union over the next five years.

The elections, which will take place at branch, district, regional, and national levels, are scheduled to begin in February and conclude in September.

The process aims to ensure that members elect leaders committed to advancing the union’s mission and protecting the welfare of all members.

Speaking at a two-day working session for regional secretaries in Morogoro, TUGHE National Chairperson Comrade Joel George Kaminyoge called on members to take the elections seriously.

He urged them to choose leaders who will prioritize the union’s interests, strengthen unity, and promote accountability among public servants.

“The success of our union depends on the leaders we elect,” Kaminyoge said. “Members must select individuals who will safeguard TUGHE’s values and advance the welfare of our members across the country.”

The session also reviewed the union’s achievements in 2025, noting significant progress in improving workplace representation, resolving disputes, and providing legal support to members.

Secretary General Comrade Hery H. Mkunda highlighted that TUGHE had successfully defended members’ rights in multiple legal cases, reinforcing its role as a strong and credible union.

Comrade Catherine Katele, Chairperson of the TUGHE National Women’s Committee, praised regional secretaries for supporting women’s programs and initiatives within the union.

She announced the distribution of tablets to regional secretaries to enhance their efficiency in daily operations.

TUGHE has urged all members to participate actively in the elections, either by contesting for leadership positions or voting, while strictly adhering to the union’s Constitution and election guidelines.

Eligible candidates are required to be active members in good standing and committed to upholding TUGHE’s principles.

With this election, TUGHE aims to deepen democratic practices within the union, strengthen accountability, and ensure continued protection of workers’ rights. The union continues to operate under its motto,

“Better Service, Greater Interests,” reaffirming its commitment to improving welfare and service delivery for all members.
