Tanzania’s Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Hamad Hassan Chande, has called for greater innovation and stronger institutional collaboration to accelerate growth in the country’s antiquities and cultural heritage sector.
Speaking at a working session with officials from the Antiquities Department in Dodoma, Chande urged the department to adopt more creative approaches in promoting heritage sites and historical museums in order to attract both domestic and international tourists.
He said the antiquities sector should play a more prominent role in contributing to national revenue and economic growth, particularly by developing new cultural tourism destinations and revitalising historical museums.
Chande also directed the department to strengthen cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to enhance joint promotion of heritage attractions.
He emphasized the importance of preserving historical archives, including song collections linked to key events in the history of Tanganyika and Zanzibar during and after the independence struggle.
Earlier, Director of Antiquities Christowaja Ntandu said the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism would continue encouraging local government authorities to open new heritage sites and attractions.
The department will also expand public awareness campaigns through exhibitions, festivals, and workshops to promote investment in cultural resources as a key tourism product in Tanzania.
