The country five delegations at the ongoing Special Olympics Africa Region athletes congress and Youth Summit are expected back in the country tomorrow (Tuesday)from.South Africa .
Special Olympics Tanzania (SOT) Chief executive director Charles Rays said the congress and summit drew 130 leaders from 14 African countries and was funded by Special Olympics Africa.
He said the aims of the four days congress and summit was youth and athletes empowerment in leadership ,public speaking,advocacy and better money habits .
Also other aims were empowering the next generation of special Olympics Africa.
He named the country delegations at the congress and summit as Jerry Mokiwa who doubles as SOT and Africa Region youth leader,Herith Suleiman Herith who is SOT athletes leader ,Bethuel Money who is the athletes partner ,Daniel Kiloba and Coach and mentor Eva Mhevita .
"This is the first time that we have the summit and congress of this kind in Africa ,the aim was empowering the next generation of athletes ,it means more than preparing young people for future but also trusting them to lead today , Special Olympics believe young people are not just participants but dicision makers and advocates for change ,''he said.
Special Olympics in the country has been active in organizing seminars and other activities for athletes ,coaches and leaders ,last year SOT organized a workshop on general orientation of special Olympics and coach training at Patandi Teachers Training college of special needs education where 150 students attended .
The workshop at Patandi Teachers Training college was aimed for familiarize participants with special Olympics,it covered both theory and practical focusing on what special Olympics involve .
