The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has stepped up efforts to tackle electricity theft by conducting extensive meter inspections across the city.
On February 2, 2026, a team of engineers, electrical technicians, and security officers carried out checks that uncovered several cases of illegal electricity use.
Among the findings, two meters had been tampered with, one customer was bypassing their meter, and another had consumed electricity for nearly two years without payment.
Speaking on the operation, TANESCO’s Revenue Control Unit Manager, Engineer Mposheleye Mwasenga, urged consumers to adhere to legal electricity usage.
“We call on all electricity users to purchase power based on actual consumption and avoid illegal connections. Such practices increase unnecessary costs and can lead to heavy penalties,” said Mwasenga.
TANESCO said the inspections will continue across the country to protect company revenues and ensure electricity is used safely and legally.
