The Government of Tanzania is implementing the Rural Electrification Project Phase Two B (HEP 2B) to expand access to electricity and accelerate economic growth across Kigoma Region.
The project will extend electricity to 9,009 hamlets in 25 regions of Mainland Tanzania, benefiting approximately 290,300 initial customers nationwide.
It is expected to stimulate economic activities, promote trade and industrial development, and contribute to the growth of the national economy.
Speaking on February 13, 2026, in Kigoma, the Kigoma Regional Administrative Secretary, Abbas Rugwa, said the project will create a strong foundation for increased investment and expanded economic activities in the region.
Under HEP 2B, electricity will be extended to 196 hamlets in Kigoma Region at a total cost of TZS 39.7 billion.
The project will be implemented by Silo Power Ltd, which has been appointed as the contractor for the works.
Mr. Rugwa noted that the project is expected to connect about 6,308 customers in Kigoma, enabling the establishment and growth of businesses, industries, and other productive activities.
He emphasized the importance of completing the project within the agreed timeframe to ensure timely realization of its economic benefits.
Meanwhile, the Western Zone Project Manager from the Rural Energy Agency (REA), Engineer Robert Dulle, stated that all 306 villages in Kigoma Region are already connected to electricity.
He added that the HEP 2B project will now focus on connecting all remaining hamlets that were previously without power, ensuring full electricity coverage across the region.
The implementation of the HEP 2B project is expected to strengthen local economic activities, support industrial growth, and enhance overall development in Kigoma Region.
