The Regional Commissioner of Rukwa, Makongoro Nyerere, has vowed to prioritize the Rural Energy Agency’s (REA) project to supply electricity to 156 villages under Phase II B (HEP 2B), in a move expected to transform local livelihoods.

Hon. Makongoro made the declaration on February 3, 2026, after receiving a progress report from REA Deputy Director, Mr. Frank Mugogo, who also introduced the contractor, M/s Dieynem Co. Ltd, tasked with executing the project.

“I am directing my team to give this project the highest priority over the next three years. It will remain a key agenda item in my regional security committee to ensure it is implemented efficiently, on time, and to the highest standards,” RC Makongoro said.

The RC also instructed the contractor to submit monthly progress reports and urged all parties to work with dedication to ensure timely completion.

According to Mr. Mugogo, Rukwa has a total of 1,816 villages, of which 1,508 already have electricity, leaving 308 without power.

“Through HEP 2B, 156 villages will now gain access to electricity, benefiting 5,508 new customers. Each connection will cost only TZS 27,000. It is crucial that communities in the project areas are informed about this,” he said.

Mr. Novatus Lyimo, Project Manager at Dieynem Co. Ltd, assured that the project would be completed on schedule and encouraged residents to take advantage of opportunities created by the project, including employment during its implementation.

The government has set aside TZS 17.8 billion to accelerate the HEP 2B project, part of ongoing efforts to expand electricity access in rural areas and support socioeconomic development across Rukwa.
