Prime Minister Dkt. Mwigulu Nchemba has officially inspected the 28-town water supply project in Korogwe District, valued at TZS 171 billion, describing it as a project that elevates Tanzania’s stature and prioritizes the dignity of its citizens.
Addressing local leaders and residents at Mswaha Darajani Village, Mswaha Ward, the Prime Minister expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress and emphasized that local communities, especially those in Mswaha bordering the project area, will receive priority access to water once the system is operational.
“Today we see a project that reflects visionary leadership. President Dkt. Samia Suluhu Hassan has committed resources to ensure that communities in Muheza, Handeni, Korogwe, and Pangani benefit directly,” he said.
“President Samia is a leader who genuinely cares about the development of her people. This project is not just about solving water challenges it enhances our nation’s image and respects the dignity of every resident in Tanga Region,” the Prime Minister added.
Earlier, Minister of Water Jumaa Aweso reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the National Water Grid Strategy.
Tanzania now has a total water capacity of 126 billion liters, which will be utilized efficiently to benefit citizens across the country.
“President Samia instructed us to use Tanzania’s water resources to address water scarcity. She is determined to ensure that no Tanzanian woman struggles to fetch water, which is why she launched the campaign to ease the burden of carrying water,” said Minister Aweso.
Engineer Mwajuma Waziri, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water, reported that the project, which draws water from the Pangani River, is designed to serve Handeni, Korogwe, Muheza, and Pangani districts, along with 161 surrounding villages.
“The project is currently 76% complete. Upon completion, it will deliver 51 million liters of treated water per day, directly benefiting more than 868,000 residents in the targeted areas,” she said.
Managed by the Handeni Trunk Main (HTM) Water and Environmental Sanitation Authority, the project will increase water production from 5.5 million liters per day to 52 million liters per day, ensuring sufficient supply for the next 20 years.
The project is expected to directly benefit 870,629 residents, including 130,843 in Korogwe, 546,680 in Handeni, 142,711 in Muheza, and 50,395 in Pangani.
This milestone underscores the government’s commitment to sustainable water access, improving quality of life for Tanzanian citizens while enhancing the nation’s development credentials.
