Residents of Handeni District are set to benefit from a major electricity infrastructure project worth TZS 44.14 billion, aimed at improving reliable power supply, strengthening local economies, and enhancing daily livelihoods.
Speaking during the foundation stone–laying ceremony on February 14, 2026, the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, said the project involves the construction of a modern power substation at Mkata.
The investment will also fund a 45-kilometre, 33-kilovolt electricity transmission line connecting Mkata to Kwamsisi village.
For many years, citizens of Handeni have relied on electricity transmitted from Tanga, resulting in frequent outages and weak power due to long transmission distances.
The new project will instead supply electricity from Chalinze, which is closer to Handeni. This change is expected to reduce power losses, improve voltage stability, and ensure more dependable electricity for households, businesses, schools, and health facilities.
Minister Ndejembi emphasized that the project will directly improve the quality of life for citizens in Handeni and Kilindi District by supporting small businesses, agro-processing activities, and emerging mining operations, including graphite mining.
Reliable electricity will also attract new investors, expand employment opportunities, and increase incomes for local communities. About 120 jobs are expected to be created during the project’s implementation.
The project is being implemented by TBEA of China, with construction having started on August 17, 2023, and completion scheduled for November 16, 2026.
Local resident Rashid Hamza welcomed the initiative, noting that frequent power cuts in the past limited productivity and business growth.
He expressed optimism that the new substation will enable citizens to increase production, create jobs, and improve household incomes through dependable electricity.
The foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Mwigulu Nchemba, underscoring the Government’s commitment to investing in energy infrastructure that places citizens at the center of national development.
