The Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Prof. Riziki Shemdoe, has praised Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving the construction of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Handeni Town Council Hospital, describing the project as a clear demonstration of the President’s dedication to saving lives and improving healthcare services.

Prof. Shemdoe made the remarks on February 13, 2026, at Handeni Square while addressing residents ahead of a public meeting led by the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, following his official visit to inspect and inaugurate development projects in Handeni District.

He noted that the ICU facility is a critical investment in healthcare, particularly for the treatment of critically ill patients who previously had to be referred to distant hospitals for specialized care.

“People of Handeni, let us sincerely thank President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for approving funds for this ICU building. Its importance may not be obvious to everyone, but for those requiring intensive care, this facility is lifesaving,” said Prof. Shemdoe.

He added that the Government, through the PMO-RALG, continues to prioritize strengthening healthcare infrastructure nationwide. Plans are underway to assess the construction of ICU facilities in other districts, including Lushoto and Mkinga, ensuring improved access to critical healthcare services across the country.

The Deputy Minister in the PMO-RALG (Education) and Member of Parliament for Handeni Urban Constituency, Reuben Kwagilwa, expressed gratitude to the President for facilitating major improvements at Handeni Town Council Hospital.

He highlighted the construction of the ICU, laboratory, emergency unit, and mortuary as a major upgrade from the hospital’s old infrastructure, which had been in use since 1961.

The Medical Officer in Charge of the hospital, Dr. Hudi Muradi, assured that the new facilities would be used responsibly to provide high-quality healthcare services.

He emphasized the hospital’s commitment to maintaining the infrastructure to ensure long-term benefits.

On behalf of the local residents, Khalid Hassan Malungula welcomed the ICU project, noting that it has significantly improved care for critically ill patients, who were previously treated together with general patients.

The completion of the ICU facility marks a major step forward in improving healthcare services in Handeni, reflecting the Government’s continued commitment to delivering development that prioritizes health and well-being.
