The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving care services and living conditions at homes for the elderly and other vulnerable groups, as part of broader efforts to ensure senior citizens live with dignity, safety and access to essential social and health services.

The pledge was reiterated on February 20, 2026, by the Deputy Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Maryprisca Mahundi, during an inspection visit to the Nunge Elderly Care Centre in Kigamboni District, Dar es Salaam.

During the visit, Ms Mahundi assessed the quality of services offered at the facility and listened to challenges facing elderly residents, noting that the Government views older persons as a valuable national asset and custodians of wisdom and moral values.

She said the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, under the leadership of Samia Suluhu Hassan, has continued to take deliberate measures to improve the welfare and living environment of the elderly, particularly those in vulnerable circumstances and without family support.

“Our elders are a national treasure and a source of wisdom that has shaped families, communities and the nation at large,” Ms Mahundi said.

“The Government recognises their contribution and remains committed to ensuring they live with dignity, safety and the respect they deserve. Aging is a natural stage of life for all, and reaching old age is a blessing that should be honoured.”she added

She added that strengthening elderly care centres is part of wider social protection reforms aimed at promoting inclusion and improving the quality of life for special groups across the country.

The Officer in Charge of the Nunge Elderly Care Centre, Ms Jacklina Kanyamwenge, said the facility continues to provide essential services, including accommodation, nutritious meals and healthcare, to ensure the well-being of residents.

She noted that the centre works closely with the Government and development partners to improve infrastructure and service delivery so that the living environment aligns with the needs of elderly residents.

Several residents at the centre welcomed the Government’s continued support, saying improved care and services have brought them comfort, restored hope and enabled them to live in peace and dignity.
