Zanzibar Residents call for official mineral markets to boost trade

By The Respondents Reporter

Residents of Zanzibar have called on the government to set up official mineral markets and auctions on the islands, aiming to make mineral trading safer, more transparent, and more profitable for small-scale miners, traders, and investors.

The request came from visitors to the Mining Commission’s pavilion at the ongoing 12th Zanzibar International Trade Fair in Fumba.

Citizens said that the absence of formal mineral markets and auctions has made it difficult for them to fully participate in the sector.

They noted that establishing official markets would not only boost Zanzibar’s economy but also create jobs for young people and women, increase incomes for local communities, and curb unregulated mineral trading.

At the fair, the Mining Commission showcased opportunities across the mining value chain, including exploration, extraction, processing, value addition, and trading, as well as services supporting mining operations.

Greyson Mwase, Public Relations and Communications Manager at the Mining Commission, said the sector offers inclusive opportunities for all, including small-scale miners, youth, and women.

He encouraged residents to register for Small-Scale Mining Licenses (PML), engage in value addition, and conduct business through formal channels.

The 12th Zanzibar International Trade Fair runs until January 16, 2026. Citizens are invited to visit the Mining Commission’s pavilion to learn, seek advice, and explore investment opportunities in Zanzibar’s growing mineral sector.
