Tanzania’s national football team, Taifa Stars, returned home today to a hero’s welcome after making history at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, reaching the round of 16 for the first time ever.

The arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) turned into a vibrant celebration of national pride, with hundreds of Tanzanians, entertainment groups, and supporters gathering to cheer the players and honor their remarkable achievement.

Speaking after the team’s arrival, Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof. Paramagamba Kabudi, praised the players and coaching staff for their dedication and hard work.

He emphasized that Taifa Stars had not only competed but had represented Tanzania with distinction across the continent.

“The players demonstrated exceptional skill, determination, and fighting spirit. Their performance gives us confidence that in future competitions, Tanzania will perform even better,” Prof. Kabudi said.

He noted that reaching the round of 16 is a strong foundation for preparing for AFCON 2027, which Tanzania will co-host with Kenya and Uganda.

Prof. Kabudi added that the government remains committed to investing in sports to support President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of a vibrant sporting sector.

Deputy Minister Hamis Mwinjuma highlighted that the team had fulfilled its objectives despite challenges, particularly in the final match against Morocco.

“The players owe nothing. They gave their all, fought to the last minute, and proudly carried the national flag. This shows that Tanzania will enter AFCON 2027 as a strong and serious contender,” Mwinjuma said.

Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner, Albert Chalamila, said preparations for AFCON 2027 are already underway, including learning from Morocco’s hosting experience, upgrading infrastructure, and strengthening security.

Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi praised his squad for their discipline and high morale throughout the tournament, while star player Simon Msuva thanked Tanzanians for their overwhelming support, which inspired the team to push their limits.

The reception at JNIA sent a powerful message: Taifa Stars have not only made history but have also sparked hope and excitement as Tanzania looks ahead to AFCON 2027.

The team’s achievement has united the nation, proving that with dedication and teamwork, Tanzanian football can shine on Africa’s biggest stage.
