The Government of Tanzania, through President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has rewarded the national football team, Taifa Stars, with TZS 500 million following their qualification to the round of 16 at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Taifa Stars secured their spot in the knockout stage after drawing 1-1 against Tunisia in the final group match, a result that ensured Tanzania progressed in the tournament.

Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba, speaking to the players and coaching staff via phone, said the cash reward is a special gift from the President in recognition of their achievement.

“The President has followed every game closely and is pleased with the discipline, effort, and teamwork shown by the squad to reach this important stage,” the Prime Minister said.

He added that the Government recognizes its role in supporting sports development, noting that some initiatives are already in place while others are ongoing.

Prime Minister Mwigulu also promised a bigger reward if Taifa Stars advance to the quarterfinals, with the team set to face host nation Morocco in their next match.

Tanzanians are rallying behind Taifa Stars as they aim to make history in the tournament.
