The State of Palestine’s top diplomat in Tanzania has accused Israel of destroying the headquarters of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees in Jerusalem, calling the move an illegal violation of international law and an attack on the United Nations itself.
Salim Siam, Charge d’Affaires at the Embassy of the State of Palestine to Tanzania, said Israeli forces had raided UNRWA offices, destroyed property, confiscated equipment and prevented staff from carrying out their operations.
“UNRWA was established by United Nations resolutions in 1949 to assist Palestinian refugees following the creation of the State of Israel, and it has a mandate to support Palestinian refugees worldwide,” Siam said in a statement.
He described the actions as “a dangerous violation of international law” and “an aggression against the world body, the United Nations itself,” adding that the move showed “disrespect to the entire international community and UN member states.”
Siam urged countries that support the United Nations to respond to what he called an attack on the organisation and its humanitarian mission
