UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais has highlighted Madrid and Spain’s strategic role as a global meeting point for the tourism industry, underscoring the country’s importance as host of the United Nations tourism body and a convening hub for international dialogue and cooperation.

Speaking at a press conference to launch FITUR 2026, one of the world’s leading tourism trade fairs, Al Nuwais said Spain’s capital continues to provide a unique platform for governments, private sector players and development partners to shape the future of global tourism.

She noted that the sector remains resilient, dynamic and transformative, with a growing contribution to economic development, job creation and social progress across regions.

The Secretary-General emphasised that tourism is increasingly recognised as a powerful driver of inclusive growth, capable of revitalising local economies, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises, and strengthening cultural exchange, while also contributing to national development agendas.

Looking ahead to FITUR 2026, scheduled to take place from January 21 to 25, with Mexico as the guest country, Al Nuwais reaffirmed the importance of strong cooperation between the public and private sectors to unlock the industry’s full potential.

She stressed that responsible investment, skills development, education and the creation of quality jobs must remain at the centre of tourism strategies worldwide.

She also called for a renewed commitment to sustainability, urging stakeholders to promote tourism models that are environmentally sound, economically viable and socially inclusive.

According to the Secretary-General, such an approach is critical to ensuring that tourism growth delivers long-term benefits for communities while preserving natural and cultural heritage.

FITUR 2026 is expected to bring together global tourism leaders, policymakers and investors, further consolidating Madrid’s position as a focal point for shaping the future direction of the global tourism sector.
