Efforts to protect Mount Kilimanjaro and promote sustainable tourism are gaining strength through innovative use of film and arts, an approach that also enhances people-to-people diplomacy and international cooperation between Tanzania and China.

The development was evident during the launch of the second phase of the Guardians of the Peak program on January 14, 2026.

The initiative aims to strengthen environmental conservation, raise public awareness, and showcase Tanzania globally through creative filmmaking and active participation of both local and international stakeholders.

The first phase, implemented in 2024, engaged various stakeholders in activities such as climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, symbolizing responsible tourism and environmental protection.

The initiative was officially launched on May 10, 2025, coordinated by Ram Ally, Executive Director of Ram Films and project founder, in collaboration with Shuyan Wang (Elizabeth Mrembo), co-founder and program coordinator.

The second-phase launch brought together leaders from public and private sectors, including Emmanuel Ndumukwa representing the Tanzania Film Board (TFB), Gervas Kasiga, and representatives from the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA).

Their presence highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting natural resources while promoting tourism.

Michael Feng Zhenyu, Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Service Center, underscored the importance of Tanzania-China collaboration in environmental, tourism, and cultural projects, noting that such partnerships lay the foundation for sustainable development and stronger ties between the two nations.

Private sector players also joined the effort. Joseph Kahama, Permanent Secretary of the Tanzania-China Friendly Partnership Association (TCFPA), and Fadhili Haule, Public Relations and Marketing Manager at ZARA Tour, reaffirmed the tourism industry’s support for conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

The program has also engaged university students through the Guardians of the Peak UNI Challenge, which allows young people to propose innovative ideas and sustainable solutions for environmental protection.

This initiative cultivates awareness, accountability, and leadership among the next generation in conservation efforts.

Supported by the Tanzania Tourism Board (TTB) and the Tanzania Film Board (TFB), the program demonstrates the power of film, arts, and tourism as tools to inspire conservation and promote Tanzania globally.

The second phase is expected to strengthen Kilimanjaro’s natural heritage while boosting international cooperation for the benefit of present and future generations.
