The Tanzanian government has praised the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) for its efforts to enhance port operations, a move that has improved service quality, accountability, and efficiency while contributing to national economic growth.
Speaking in Pwani region during a visit to Nyamisati Port, Deputy Minister of Transport David Kihenzile highlighted that recent improvements have positioned the port sector as a key driver of the economy.
Enhancements have accelerated cargo handling, reduced ship turnaround times, and improved the business environment for traders and companies.
“These measures have increased government revenue and strengthened Tanzania’s role as a strategic gateway for trade and cargo transport in East and Central Africa,” Deputy Minister Kihenzile said.
He urged TPA to ensure that ongoing port development projects, including Bagamoyo, Kisiju, and Nyamisati, deliver direct benefits to local communities through corporate social responsibility initiatives, such as social services and surrounding infrastructure improvements.
On maritime safety, the Deputy Minister noted that the government, through the Tanzania Shipping Company (TASHICO), is conducting technical studies to identify critical needs and enhance both cargo and passenger transport services.
Acting Director of Dar es Salaam Port, Abed Gallus, added that planned upgrades include improvements to the passenger terminal to accommodate 300 passengers simultaneously, along with the construction and modernization of other port infrastructure.
The ongoing port enhancements are likely to further streamline trade logistics, attract investment, and strengthen Tanzania’s position as a regional trade hub, supporting broader economic development goals.
