Dar Police arrest man over alleged assault of wife, child in Ilala

Dar es Salaam police have arrested a man suspected of brutally assaulting his wife and their young child in an incident that occurred in Ilala District, sparking public concern and renewed calls to end domestic violence.

In a statement issued on January 11, 2026, the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone said the suspect, identified as Joseph Daudi Mwakalinga, popularly known as “Jiggerman,” a resident of Zimbili area in Kinyerezi, was taken into custody following the incident, which allegedly took place on January 8, 2026.

Police said the suspect is accused of causing serious injuries to his spouse and their minor child. The identity of the child has been withheld in line with child protection laws and ethical considerations.

“The suspect has been arrested and is currently undergoing police interrogation,” the statement said, adding that further legal procedures are underway, including collaboration with other justice institutions, to ensure the law takes its course.

The police command strongly condemned acts of domestic violence, describing them as unacceptable and a violation of fundamental human rights. 

It urged parents, guardians and community members to desist from all forms of cruelty, particularly against women and children.

Dar es Salaam police further called on the public to report cases of domestic abuse without fear, stressing that early reporting helps authorities to act swiftly and prevent further harm.

The statement was issued by the Commander of the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone, who reaffirmed the police force’s commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and maintaining public safety.
