Active participation by surrounding communities is increasingly strengthening tree planting activities at the Sao Hill Forest Plantation, as citizens benefit both economically and educationally from the ongoing programme implemented by the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS).
Seedling lifting and preparation activities are progressing well at nursery sites in Irundi First Division and Ihalimba Third Division within the plantation.
The exercise forms part of sustained efforts to expand planted forests, boost forest resource production and ensure long-term environmental conservation.
Residents living around the Sao Hill Forest Plantation have been fully engaged in the activities, enabling the creation of temporary employment opportunities that have helped raise household incomes and improve livelihoods.
At the same time, the initiative has enhanced cooperation between the plantation and the local communities.
In addition to the economic gains, participants have acquired practical knowledge on the establishment and management of tree nurseries.
This includes skills in seed sowing, proper seedling care and preparation of seedlings for successful field planting.
Speaking during the exercise, Assistant Chief Conservator of the Sao Hill Forest Plantation, PCO Said Singano, said the seedling lifting process is being conducted in accordance with professional forestry standards to ensure quality.
He stressed that careful handling of seedlings is essential to protect the roots, noting that high-quality seedlings are a critical factor for successful tree growth and productivity in the field.
Through direct involvement, community members have also learned best practices in tree planting, including correct spacing, appropriate planting seasons and early maintenance after planting.
The activities have further improved public understanding of the role played by the Sao Hill Forest Plantation in environmental protection, climate change mitigation and the sustainable supply of forest products for national development.
One of the participants, Mr Joshua Ng’umbi from Igowole Village in Mufindi District, said the programme has helped him earn income while gaining valuable forestry skills.
He said the experience has enabled him to understand how to select quality seedlings and apply proper planting techniques to ensure healthy tree growth, which is essential for producing high-quality timber and better economic returns in the future.
Overall, the seedling lifting exercise in Irundi and Ihalimba divisions continues to generate wide-ranging benefits for both the Sao Hill Forest Plantation and neighbouring communities by strengthening tree planting efforts, creating employment opportunities and enhancing knowledge in forestry and environmental conservation.
