CAG commends TARURA for strong performance in infrastructure development

The Controller and Auditor General (CAG), Mr Charles Kichere, has commended the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) for its strong performance in developing road infrastructure across the country, despite being a relatively young institution.

Mr Kichere made the remarks on January 9, 2026, during his visit to TARURA headquarters at the Government City in Mtumba, Dodoma, where he held discussions with the agency’s management.

He said that since its establishment, TARURA has delivered visible and impactful results through the construction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges that have significantly improved access to social and economic services for citizens, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas.

“TARURA does not have many years since its establishment, but the results of its work are clearly visible. Many roads and bridges have been built, and citizens are continuing to benefit from improved connectivity,” said Mr Kichere.

The CAG noted that improved road infrastructure has played a key role in boosting economic activities by easing the movement of people, goods and services, thereby contributing to the growth of both local economies and the national economy.

He further emphasized that TARURA’s work goes beyond economic development, as well-planned road infrastructure can also support public health objectives.

He encouraged the agency to continue developing roads that align with current needs, including designs that promote walking and physical activity as part of efforts to combat non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Mr Kichere reaffirmed the importance of accountability, efficiency and sustainability in the implementation of infrastructure projects, urging TARURA to maintain high standards as it expands its operations nationwide.

TARURA officials welcomed the CAG’s remarks, describing them as a motivation to further strengthen the agency’s role in supporting Tanzania’s development agenda through reliable and inclusive road infrastructure.
