The Deputy Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Sauda Msemo, has underscored the importance of expanding access to affordable housing finance as a key driver of social and economic development, during talks with a delegation from the European Mortgage Federation (EMF).
Speaking at the meeting held on January 9, 2026, at the Bank of Tanzania headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Ms Msemo said that despite progress made in developing the mortgage market, more efforts are needed to lower the cost of housing loans and widen access for ordinary citizens.
She noted that affordable mortgage financing would enable more Tanzanians to own homes, contributing to improved living standards and sustainable economic growth.
Ms Msemo said a well-functioning housing finance sector has far-reaching benefits, including stimulating growth in construction, creating jobs and strengthening the financial sector. She emphasised that inclusive mortgage systems are essential for supporting urban development and addressing the country’s growing housing demand.
She added that the central bank remains committed to working with both domestic and international partners to improve the availability and delivery of housing finance.
According to her, this will be achieved through strengthening financial systems, promoting investment and enhancing the resilience of the financial sector to ensure long-term stability.
The engagement with the European Mortgage Federation reflects Tanzania’s continued efforts to learn from international best practices and deepen cooperation aimed at building a more inclusive, efficient and sustainable housing finance market.
