Bashiru orders LITA, TALIRI to drive transformation in livestock sector

Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Ambassador Dr Bashiru Ally Kakurwa has directed the Livestock Training Agency (LITA) and the Tanzania Livestock Research Institute (TALIRI) to use modern livestock training and research to accelerate transformation in the country’s livestock sector.

Dr Bashiru issued the directive on January 24, 2026, during his visit to the two institutions in Mabuki, Mwanza Region, stressing that up-to-date research and skills development must translate into tangible improvements in livestock production.

“Our research and training must be used to transform livestock keepers. We should identify those who have already embraced change and invested in modern practices, equip them with advanced expertise, and use them as channels for spreading technology to others,” he said.

He further instructed LITA to strengthen follow-up mechanisms to assess how farmers apply the skills gained through its training programmes, while directing TALIRI to monitor the adoption and impact of livestock research by stakeholders in the sector.

The minister also urged livestock professionals to uphold high standards of professional ethics in their engagement with farmers, saying stronger trust and collaboration are essential for sustainable sector growth.

He emphasised that improved coordination between research institutions, training agencies and livestock keepers will be critical in modernising production systems, boosting productivity and enhancing incomes in rural communities.
