Bank of Tanzania offers government bonds and treasury bills investments

By Our Correspondent Reporter

The Bank of Tanzania, on behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania, is offering long-term government bonds and short-term Treasury bills as a way to raise funds from the local market. Eligible buyers include institutions, groups, banks, and individual investors.

Long-term government bonds are securities with a maturity period of more than one year. They are sold on the primary market through competitive and non-competitive auctions managed by the Bank of Tanzania. After the initial sale, these bonds can also be traded on the secondary market through the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange.

Investors can purchase government bonds through licensed agents, including commercial banks authorized by the Bank of Tanzania, or licensed brokers regulated by the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA).

The minimum investment for long-term government bonds is TZS 1,000,000. To invest, it is necessary to open a Central Depository System (CDS) Account, a special investment account used to record and manage all investment transactions. CDS accounts can be opened through commercial banks or licensed brokers.

Opening a CDS account is free. Investors are required to provide identification documents such as a National ID (NIDA), a Tax Identification Number (TIN), and two recent passport-size photos.

Investors in long-term government bonds receive interest payments (coupons) twice a year. The Bank of Tanzania ensures the coupon is paid directly into the investor’s designated bank account.

Government securities offer Tanzanians a safe and structured way to invest while supporting the country’s economic growth.
