ACT Wazalendo has strongly condemned the police for preventing the Party for Democracy and Development (CHADEMA) from celebrating its anniversary in Nkasi District, Rukwa Region.
The party had planned social and nation-building activities, including tree planting, aimed at benefiting the community and the environment.
“Social initiatives like tree planting should be encouraged, not obstructed. Preventing citizens or organizations from contributing positively to the country sends the wrong message,” ACT Wazalendo said in a statement.
CHADEMA is a fully registered political party under Tanzanian law. While there is a court case imposing temporary restrictions on some of its political activities, ACT Wazalendo argued that such restrictions do not justify stopping celebrations that involve social and community development activities.
The party described the police action as oppressive, unfair, and harmful to national unity. “Blocking peaceful, socially beneficial activities deepens divisions, fosters resentment, and undermines efforts to build peace, love, and solidarity among Tanzanians,” the statement read.
ACT Wazalendo called on the government and police to respect citizens’ rights and stop actions that suppress freedoms and democracy.
The party emphasized the need for restraint, especially as the nation continues to heal from political unrest and public demonstrations that previously resulted in the deaths of innocent citizens.
“Justice and fairness must be upheld. Oppression, discrimination, and abusive acts must end. Citizens have the right to engage in activities that benefit the country,” ACT Wazalendo added.
The party also reminded the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and the government of their responsibility to safeguard citizens’ rights and ensure accountable governance.
Failure to do so, it warned, could prompt citizens to demand accountability through lawful means.
