The government is empowering local fish farmers in Ruvuma Region through the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Programme (AFDP), helping them increase fish production, improve fish feed, manage ponds efficiently, and promote better nutrition and gender inclusion.

At a programme planning meeting in Songea District on January 15, 2026, Mr. Deogratius Sibula, Ruvuma Regional Assistant Secretary for Economy and Wealth Production, said the initiative is part of the government’s effort to strengthen aquaculture and ensure food security for citizens.

“This programme will reach five councils in Ruvuma: Songea Municipal Council, and Mbinga, Namtumbo, Nyasa, and Tunduru District Councils,” Mr. Sibula explained.

The first phase will train 2,000 local fish farmers across 25 wards, running from January 15 to January 22, 2026.

The training will equip farmers with practical skills to move from small-scale, subsistence fish farming to commercial operations using modern, efficient methods.

“This is a golden opportunity for local farmers to boost their incomes, improve fish quality, and contribute to food security in the region,” Mr. Sibula added.

Ms. Mkomanile Mahundi, Chief Fisheries Officer and AFDP Programme Liaison, said the training involves experts from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, the Prime Minister’s Office, Parliament, and local council specialists.

She also noted that this initiative will continue in other regions, including Morogoro, Tanga, Geita, and Tabora, ensuring more Tanzanians benefit from modern aquaculture practices.

The programme underscores the government’s commitment to supporting citizens, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable fish farming that strengthens both local economies and food security.
