The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has announced plans to begin construction of a circular railway within Dar es Salaam in January 2026.
The project, developed in partnership with the private sector, aims to link key economic hubs across the city, transforming Dar es Salaam into a modern Metro City.
TRC Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Machibya Masanja, revealed the plan today in Arusha while presenting the corporation’s inclusive economic development strategy at the 18th Joint Transport Sector Review Meeting under the theme: “Integrated Transport Systems as a Foundation for Economic Transformation Towards DIRA 2050.”
The first phase of construction will cover Mwenge, Mlimani City, the East African Market, Morocco, and Kariakoo – areas known for high population density and economic activity.
“Dar es Salaam faces serious traffic congestion. While other Metro Cities experience the same, this railway will ease commuting and make transport more efficient. It will be built along road medians to minimize disruption,” Engineer Masanja explained.
Once completed, the railway is expected to improve mobility, cut travel time, and support economic growth by connecting major commercial centers across the city.
