TFRA tightens port controls as fertilizer inflows gather pace

By Our Correspondent,Dar es Salaam

The Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA) has stepped up supervision at the Dar es Salaam Port as fertilizer imports increase ahead of the 2025/26 farming season, in a move aimed at ensuring timely availability and quality of inputs for farmers across the country.

The authority says heightened monitoring at the port is critical as large consignments are offloaded and dispatched to regional warehouses to meet rising demand in key agricultural zones.

Speaking during an inspection visit on December 15, 2025, TFRA Director for Production, Importation and Bulk Fertilizer Procurement, Mr Louis Kasela, said the regulator was working closely with port authorities and importers to streamline offloading and distribution processes.

He said TFRA was overseeing the discharge of a 40,000-tonne consignment of planting fertilizers imported by OCP–Tanzania, adding that similar shipments from other suppliers were arriving to build adequate stocks ahead of the season.

Mr Kasela noted that the increased inflow of fertilizers reflects improved coordination between the government and the private sector, helping to minimise supply disruptions and stabilise availability in farming regions.

He urged farmers to register early in the government fertilizer subsidy system to secure inputs at subsidised prices, saying early preparation would enable farmers to plant on time and boost productivity.

TFRA reaffirmed its commitment to strict quality control and efficient distribution of fertilizers as part of wider efforts to support agricultural growth and strengthen food security in the country.
