Tanzania reaffirms commitment to Great Lakes peace at ICGLR emergency summit

By Our Correspondent

Tanzania has reiterated its commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region following its participation in an emergency summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (PSC Framework), held in Entebbe, Uganda.

The country was represented at the high-level meeting by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Ngwaru Maghembe, on behalf of the minister.

The summit brought together leaders and senior officials from member states to deliberate on ways of advancing inclusive and coordinated dialogue aimed at addressing the root causes of conflict and restoring lasting peace in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the wider Great Lakes region.

Participants emphasised the importance of African-led and regionally driven approaches to conflict resolution, noting that sustainable peace can only be achieved through collective action, dialogue and strong political commitment among regional actors.

At the meeting, Tanzania joined other member states and international partners in stressing the need for regional ownership of peace processes.

The country reaffirmed its long-standing role in promoting dialogue, reconciliation and sustainable development as key pillars of stability in the region.

The emergency summit was preceded by a meeting of national coordinators, during which Tanzania’s delegation was led by the assistant director in the Africa Department, Ms Ellen Maduhu.

The preparatory session helped align member states’ positions ahead of the high-level deliberations.

Meanwhile, Vice President Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi is expected to represent President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the forthcoming ICGLR and PSC Framework summit of heads of state and government scheduled for December 21, 2025, following an invitation from Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.

Tanzania’s engagement at the summit underscores its continued dedication to regional peace initiatives, with officials stressing that stability in the Great Lakes region is essential for development, cooperation and the welfare of citizens across Africa.
