Pastoralists in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, have been urged to secure long-term grazing areas to safeguard their livestock against fodder shortages during drought periods.
Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Kamani, made the call on December 18, 2025, during a one-day working visit to Endonyongijape Ward.
She noted that many pastoralists currently struggle with insufficient grazing land, which threatens livestock survival.
Kamani reminded residents of the recent statement by the Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, emphasizing the need to closely monitor the livestock sector, particularly amid prolonged droughts and climate change.
She urged pastoralists to assess and secure their grazing areas, while the government, through the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, continues distributing pasture seeds to support sustainable livestock farming.
Residents also raised concerns about damage caused by elephants and wild animals that steal livestock and destroy crops and infrastructure.
The Simanjiro District Commissioner’s office confirmed the problem and said measures are being implemented to strengthen wildlife management and prevent further losses.
During the visit, Kamani toured a large-scale farm owned by Mr. Finias Laizer of Langai Village, highlighting it as a model of modern livestock farming.
She encouraged pastoralists to adopt modern techniques and maximize their land for planting fodder.
The Deputy Minister stressed that securing adequate grazing land is vital for pastoralists to withstand droughts and ensure their livestock thrive throughout the year.
