NeST training in Mbeya boosts public procurement transparency and efficiency

By Samwel Ndoni, Mbeya

Public servants in Mbeya are receiving specialized training on the National e-Procurement System (NeST) to improve efficiency, accountability, and transparency in government procurement, a move expected to benefit taxpayers and enhance service delivery.

The training, attended by officials from various procurement institutions, introduces new modules designed to strengthen skills in managing public procurement electronically.

NeST, fully operational since July 2023, requires all public procurement to be conducted through this centralized platform, covering institutions including the Government Procurement Services Agency (GPSA). The system is overseen by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA).

Regional Commissioner Beno Malisa emphasized that the training is critical for ensuring government spending delivers value to citizens.

“By fully using NeST, public servants can make procurement transparent, accountable, fair, and efficient,” Malisa said during the opening ceremony in Mbeya.

He added that the system upgrade addresses past challenges in acquiring office and operational supplies, reducing delays and minimizing opportunities for misuse of public funds.

PPRA Manager J. Pascal Manono said the training will enhance contract management and oversight of procurement processes nationwide.

“This program is ongoing and aims to reach all public servants, ensuring consistent standards in procurement practices,” Manono said.

NeST provides a centralized electronic platform where all procurement processes are tracked and monitored.

The government expects that widespread use of the system will improve planning and execution of purchases, strengthen accountability, and ultimately enhance services that citizens rely on daily.

With continued training and proper usage, public servants across Tanzania are expected to leverage NeST to deliver better value for taxpayers’ money, ensuring that public resources are used responsibly and efficiently for the benefit of all citizens.
