Katavi residents are set to benefit from a major initiative to promote clean cooking, with 3,126 modern stoves to be distributed across the region’s three districts.
The stoves, sold at a highly subsidized price of TZS 7,500, are part of the government’s effort to protect public health, conserve forests, and safeguard the environment.
The distribution is coordinated by the Rural Energy Agency (REA) and implemented by Dar es Salaam-based Tango Energy Ltd, with the project valued at TZS 156.3 million under the National Clean Cooking Energy Strategy (2024–2034).
“These stoves are meant for you. The government has paid over TZS 50,000 for each stove, yet you only need to pay TZS 7,500. I encourage everyone to seize this opportunity,” said Hon. Mrindoko.
He also praised President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her dedication to ensuring all Tanzanians have access to clean cooking energy.
REA’s Energy and Gender Expert, Dr. Joseph Sambali, explained that the stoves’ market value is TZS 59,000, but the government is providing an 85% subsidy and has waived Value Added Tax (VAT) to make them affordable for citizens.
The program is expected to significantly reduce the use of firewood, promote cleaner households, and contribute to environmental protection in Katavi.
