Iringa Police probe traffic officer after viral video sparks public outcry

The Tanzania Police Force in Iringa Region has launched investigations into a traffic police officer following the circulation of a video on social media allegedly showing the officer soliciting a bribe from a motorist, a move that has drawn strong public attention.

In a statement released on Friday, the Iringa Regional Police Command said it had reviewed the widely shared footage, recorded inside a vehicle, which appears to show a uniformed traffic officer making remarks interpreted as a request for an unlawful payment.

The police said the officer was identified through the video and that immediate administrative and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in accordance with police regulations and the laws of the country.

“The officer has been identified and strict action will be taken against him,” the statement said, underscoring the force’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and abuse of authority.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, integrity and accountability, noting that unethical conduct by individual officers undermines public trust and the credibility of the institution.

It also praised members of the public for responsibly reporting misconduct through lawful channels, saying such cooperation is vital in strengthening transparency and discipline within the police force.

The statement, issued by the Office of the Regional Police Commander in Iringa, said the police will continue to take firm action against any officer found to have violated ethical standards, as part of broader efforts to build public confidence in law enforcement services.
