The Government is set to issue electronic identification cards to 50,000 retirees across Tanzania, a move aimed at simplifying access to pension services and improving the security and reliability of retirees’ records.
In Dodoma City District, 609 retirees have already received their electronic IDs at the Ministry of Finance offices at Treasury Square, marking the start of a broader nationwide rollout.
Assistant Accountant General for Exchequer Services at the Ministry of Finance, Mr Perfectus Killenza, said the initiative replaces paper-based IDs that were easily damaged and often caused delays in accessing services.
“These new electronic IDs are secure, durable, and allow retirees’ information to be read quickly and accurately. They will improve service delivery while ensuring the safety and integrity of retirees’ records,” said Mr Killenza.
He noted that the exercise is also helping to update and verify retirees’ data, particularly for those who have reported in person to collect their new cards.
This effort resolves longstanding challenges linked to unclear or inconsistent records that previously hindered access to benefits.
Mr Killenza called on all retirees in Dodoma City District served by the Treasury to visit the Ministry’s offices with their essential documents to ensure smooth verification and timely issuance of electronic IDs.
The nationwide distribution is set to begin in January 2026, with a detailed schedule to be announced by the Ministry. Mr Killenza also reminded retirees that all Treasury-related services, especially those linked to pensions, are free of charge.
He warned retirees to avoid anyone claiming they can provide services for a fee, as such schemes are often fraudulent.
Retirees who have received the new IDs, including Mr Selemani Ramadhani and Ms Severina Kivangala, praised the Government for implementing the initiative.
They emphasized that the move will make it easier for retirees and their beneficiaries to access their entitlements and called for continued public education on using the new system.
The Ministry of Finance is conducting the distribution exercise in Dodoma over a 14-day period, from December 15 to December 30, 2025, as part of ongoing reforms to enhance efficiency, transparency, and service delivery to retirees nationwide.
