Tunduma residents face disruption as public buildings, equipment burned

Residents of Tunduma Town Council in Songwe Region continue to struggle with disruptions to essential social services following the violence and unrest that erupted on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Destructive groups and thieves attacked government facilities, destroying infrastructure used to provide critical services to the local community and the wider Songwe Region.

Video footage and photographs from the area show protesters setting government vehicles ablaze, including more than five vehicles stationed at the Mpemba Tunduma weighbridge.

A building used by officers managing the weighbridge was also torched, while vehicles waiting in line for inspection were stolen and burned.

The destruction extended to other government institutions, including Tunduma Primary Court, where buildings and office furniture were looted and set on fire, and police stations critical for maintaining public order and supporting local trade.

Residents say they continue to face significant challenges due to the lack of essential services in the area, despite government efforts to restore peace and stability.

They are now awaiting reconstruction and rehabilitation of the damaged facilities so that services such as legal administration, road management, and public safety can resume fully.

“The destruction has severely affected our access to social services. Even though peace has returned, it will take time for government offices and courts to operate normally again,” said one resident.

Authorities have assured the public that repair and rebuilding efforts are underway to restore all affected services, but the impact of the October 29 unrest continues to be felt by the local population.
