Regional hopes for a revitalised transport corridor gained momentum on Tuesday as Tanzania’s Vice President, Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi, arrived in Lusaka ahead of the launch of the long-awaited rehabilitation of the Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA).
The project, seen as a strategic investment in the movement of goods and people across Southern Africa, is expected to modernise one of the region’s most important transport arteries.
Dr. Nchimbi will represent President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the foundation stone–laying ceremony scheduled for November 20, 2025, signalling Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening regional integration through improved infrastructure.
The Vice President’s arrival was marked by a warm reception at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, where he was welcomed by Zambia’s Minister of Health, Dr. Elijah Muchima, Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Lt. Gen. Mathew Mkingule, senior officials from both governments, and cultural groups performing traditional dances.
Dr. Nchimbi travelled with senior sector leaders, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Prof. Godius Kahyarara; Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) Director General, Eng. Machibya Masanja; and TASAC Director General, Mr. Mohamed Salum, underscoring the technical and policy importance attached to the railway’s overhaul.
The TAZARA upgrade is expected to ease congestion at major ports, reduce cargo transit time, and open new economic opportunities for businesses in both Tanzania and Zambia.
By restoring the historic railway to modern standards, officials say the project will support regional trade networks and contribute to long-term economic stability.
The launch in Lusaka marks the beginning of what stakeholders describe as a transformative investment that will reconnect communities, unlock markets, and reaffirm Tanzania’s role as a gateway for regional commerce.
