Tanzanians urged to invest in government-approved companies

Tanzanians have been urged to invest in shares of formal, government-recognized companies to protect their money while earning profits and dividends.

Speaking at the East African Stock Market Conference in Dar es Salaam on November 18, Mohamed Warsame, Director of I Trust and Guest of Honour, highlighted the launch of a new investment fund covering major companies in Tanzania and across East Africa.

“By listing these companies in the fund, shareholders will have opportunities to grow the value of their investments and sell their shares when needed. Ordinary citizens are welcome to join, with a minimum investment of TZS100,000,” Warsame said.

He emphasized that the fund, which will be listed on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), will allow Tanzanian workers and small investors to buy and sell shares, earn dividends, and benefit from market growth.

“Investors can sell shares at any time, gain profits from price increases and receive dividends. This fund gives Tanzanians a chance to participate in the growing stock market,” Warsame said.

Alfred Mkombo, Director of Policy, Research and Planning at the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA), said the fund brings together more than 12 major companies from Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, Kampala, Kigali, and Luanda, giving investors a diversified portfolio.

“This is a unique fund because it spreads risk across multiple companies. Even if one company underperforms, gains from others can offset losses, ensuring steady returns for investors,” Mkombo explained.

He urged citizens to avoid unregistered investment schemes and instead focus on government-approved companies to access legitimate investment opportunities.

“We encourage Tanzanians to invest responsibly in registered companies. The fund lowers the entry threshold to TZS100,000, making it accessible to many and providing opportunities to grow wealth safely,” Mkombo said.

The launch reflects ongoing efforts to deepen East Africa’s capital markets and increase public participation in investment opportunities.
