Tanzania takes active role in UNWTO policy preparations ahead of global tourism assembly

By Our Correspondent, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Tanzania has reaffirmed its growing influence in shaping international tourism policies as the country, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Hassan Abbasi, took part in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council meeting held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The meeting, which brought together representatives from 35 member states, set the stage for the UNWTO General Assembly scheduled to commence tomorrow.

It focused on reviewing and adopting key agenda items aimed at accelerating global tourism recovery, enhancing sustainability, and strengthening innovation across the sector.

Dr. Abbasi’s leadership in the Tanzanian delegation signals the country’s increasing commitment to international tourism diplomacy and policy dialogue.

Tanzania’s participation in the Executive Council — an exclusive organ that develops and endorses policies before they are submitted to the General Assembly — reflects its recognition as a trusted voice among 160 UNWTO member states.

The council’s discussions are expected to influence decisions that will guide the direction of the global tourism industry in the coming years, especially on issues of resilience, inclusivity, and digital transformation.

For Tanzania, these deliberations align with the government’s broader efforts to diversify its tourism offerings, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen its visibility in global markets.

Tanzania’s active role in the UNWTO’s governance structures offers strategic opportunities to share its success stories in wildlife conservation, cultural tourism, and community-based tourism — areas that have continued to position the country as one of Africa’s premier destinations.

By taking part in shaping the agenda of the world’s leading tourism body, Tanzania reinforces its ambition to be not just a beneficiary of global tourism trends, but also a contributor to shaping the industry’s future direction.
