Tanzania observes World Prematurity Day, urges better care for preterm babies

Today, November 17, 2025, Tanzania joins the world in observing World Prematurity Day, a day aimed at raising awareness about the challenges faced by babies born before 37 weeks of gestation and promoting quality care to improve their survival and development.

This year’s theme, “Tanzania Cares for Preterm Babies for Better Health,” emphasizes the need to ensure every preterm child receives proper medical attention, nutrition, and close support from parents, health workers, and the community.

Globally, about 15 million babies are born prematurely each year, with over 1 million dying from related complications.

In Tanzania, approximately one in ten babies — over 250,000 annually — are born preterm, highlighting the urgent need to strengthen maternal and neonatal care services.

The Ministry of Health is stepping up efforts to improve care for preterm infants, including building special neonatal wards, supplying essential medical equipment, and training healthcare providers.

Pregnant women are urged to attend regular antenatal clinics and deliver in health facilities to reduce risks associated with preterm births.

The Ministry called on communities to support preterm babies, noting that timely care and close attention from families and healthcare providers can save lives and give these children the chance to grow and thrive.
