Tanzania leads the way in community-driven forest conservation

Tanzania is setting a new standard in forest conservation, showcasing how communities can play a central role in protecting natural resources.

This approach impressed a team of forestry experts from Yunnan Province, China, during their recent visit to the Pugu–Kazimzumbwi Forest Reserve in Kisarawe District, Pwani Region.

The delegation, visiting Tanzania from November 11 to 14, observed firsthand how local communities actively participate in forest protection while preserving cultural heritage and promoting eco-tourism.

Chief Conservator of the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), Gerald Otieno, said Tanzania’s model of community involvement has attracted attention from around the world.

“Our forests are part of our communities. Engaging people in conservation ensures sustainability. Our guests came to learn from us, and we are also sharing ideas to strengthen practices on both sides,” Otieno said.

Jianga Rui, representing the Hunan Forestry Delegation, praised Tanzania’s strong forest management system and community-led approach.

“Tanzania may have larger forests than we do, but your clear management systems and involvement of local communities are impressive. We hope to learn from your experience and apply it at home,” he said.

During the visit, the delegation toured sacred sites, eco-tourism areas, and zones rich in unique flora and fauna.

They were particularly impressed by how Tanzanians integrate traditions, rituals, and environmental education into forest conservation.

The delegation will conclude its visit in Dodoma, where they will meet the Commissioner of Forest Conservation, Prof. Dos Santos Silayo, to discuss long-term cooperation in research, training, and sustainable forest management.

“This partnership strengthens Tanzania’s leadership in sustainable forestry and demonstrates the power of community participation in protecting our natural heritage,” Otieno said.
