Tanzania is taking an active role in the 20th Ordinary Meeting of National Coordinators of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), held today in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The meeting is a key step ahead of the 19th ICGLR Ministerial Meeting of Foreign Affairs (RIMC) and the Heads of State and Government Summit, scheduled for November 13 and 15, 2025.

The meeting was officially opened by DRC’s Minister of Regional Cooperation, Hon. Floribert Anzuluni Isiloketshi, who urged national coordinators to develop recommendations that will strengthen the Secretariat’s work.

“The Secretariat must continue promoting peace, security, and development across all 12 member countries of the ICGLR,” he said.

Tanzania, a founding member of ICGLR, was represented by its National Coordinator and Assistant Director for African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ms. Ellen Maduhu, who led the country’s delegation.

ICGLR Executive Secretary, Ambassador JoĂŁo Samuel Caholo, noted the progress made by the Secretariat but said more efforts are needed to ensure lasting peace in the region, particularly in DRC, Sudan, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic.

He pointed out that poverty, inequality, and lack of access to national resources remain key causes of conflicts in Africa. He called on member states to tackle these root issues to prevent further crises.

The meeting provides a platform for member states to coordinate actions, share experiences, and propose strategies that strengthen regional stability, development, and cooperation.
